Kerry Collins

Don’t look now, but the 2011-12 NFL season starts in less than an hour. The Packers and Saints will square off at 8:30 on NBC and will pit a pair of Nittany Lion tight ends against each other. Andrew Quarless kicks off his sophomore campaign for the Packers, while John Gilmore makes his debut for the Saints, 3 days after joining them from free agency.

See the the stories to keep your eye on amongst Penn Staters in the NFL this week after the jump!

(Spoiler alert: They’re mostly about debuts)

NFL Week 15 Storylines

December 19th, 2010 No comments
This weekend, keep an eye out for the following storylines:
  • Michael Robinson has emerged as a key player in the Seahawks’ offense in the past 2 weeks, as the fullback has averaged over 10 yards per carry. In Week 14, he was even the leading rusher for the Seahawks, running for 33 yards. Robinson will be going up against one of the top defenses in the NFL as the Seahawks will be in Seattle taking on the Falcons on Sunday. The victory would be huge should the Seahawks pull out a win, as they are currently tied atop the lowly NFC West division.
  • Cameron Wake is currently leading the NFL in sacks with 14 on the season, and will be looking to extend his lead as the Dolphins take on the Bills on Sunday at 1pm. Tamba Hali is also in the top 5 in the league with 11 sacks and could realistically make for a 1-2 finish for Penn Staters atop the NFL sack leaderboard.
  • Kerry Collins will get the start for the Titans again, as the Titans play the Texans in a 1pm game on Sunday afternoon. Collins had a strong showing in Week 14 and will look to extend his strong play as he has had extra rest this week since the Titans haven’t played since last Thursday.

NFL Week 14 Storylines

December 11th, 2010 No comments

This installment is the concept as “What To Watch For,” but I just feel like this name is a lot smoother. From now on, this will be the weekly post about what to keep an eye out for on gameday.

This weekend, keep an eye out for the following storylines:

  • Punter Jeremy Kapinos seems to have found a home for the rest of the season on the Pittsburgh Steelers. This will be his first game punting for them, so it should be interesting to see how he fares in his new situation. The Steelers kick off at 1pm on Sunday against the Bengals.
  • Jordan Norwood will look to make his first NFL appearance of the season (2nd of his career) as the Browns take on the Bills at 1pm on Sunday. Norwood was added to the active roster of the Browns last week, but was declared inactive. Starting WR Josh Cribbs was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable, so if he fails to heal in time, Norwood could see some action.
  • Could this be the week that Aaron Maybin finally sees consistent playing time? The former first-round pick has seen very limited action since returning from a streak of being declared inactive, but as the Bills continue to pile up injuries and play against the lowly Browns, Maybin could get some extra looks as the Bills begin to look beyond this season.
  • Sean Lee will be looking to follow up a breakout Week 13 performance that earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, as the Cowboys take on the Eagles for the Sunday Night Football showcase. He is currently listed as questionable but the injury doesn’t appear to be threatening enough to keep him off the field. If he does play, he will have the daunting task of being a linebacker going up against Michael Vick.

NFL Week 13 Storylines

This is the first installment in a new, weekly post about what storylines to watch unfold during the upcoming weekend’s games. They could be about anything from returning from injuries or potential increases/decreases in playing time.

This weekend, keep an eye out for the following storylines:

  • Jordan Norwood will (hopefully) be playing in an NFL game for the second time in his career, as he was promoted to the Cleveland Browns’ active roster earlier in the week. The second-year wide receiver will also be looking to record the first reception in his young NFL career. The Browns kick off at 1pm on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins.
  • Bills linebacker Aaron Maybin looks set to play in his second game in a row and could see a significant increase in playing time. Maybin missed the previous 5 games due to effectively being benched by Bills coach Chan Gailey. The Bills placed linebacker Reggie Torbor on injured reserve earlier in the week and currently have a total of 4 linebackers on their injured reserve list.
  • Kerry Collins looks set to start for the Tennessee Titans for the second time this season. Collins has a calf injury that has kept him out of the past 2 games, but it currently listed as probable on the Titans’ injury report. Starting QB Vince Young was placed on injured reserve two weeks ago, forcing the Titans to start rookie Rusty Smith out of Florida Atlantic University.  Collins currently has a 79.1 passer rating on the season.
