PSU in the Playoffs: Conference Championships Preview

January 21st, 2012

4 Nittany Lions remain a single victory away from the Super Bowl, but their hardest tests will come on Sunday.

Here’s a quick rundown of who’s in action (or at least on a roster) tomorrow:

  • OG Rich Ohrnberger (Injured Reserve)Patriots — Sunday, 3:00 p.m., CBS (vs. Ravens)
  • LB Navorro Bowman49ers – Saturday, 6:30 p.m., FOX (vs. Giants)
  • OT Kareem McKenzieGiants — Sunday, 6:30 p.m., FOX (at 49ers)
  • DT Jimmy KennedyGiants – Sunday, 6:30 p.m., FOX (at 49ers)

  • The best-case scenario for the PSU in the NFLers as a whole would be a Giants win and a Patriots win. That would guarantee that one of the 3 advancing Nittany Lions would win a ring, even though Rich Ohrnberger has been on injured reserve for the entire regular season.
  • All of the action on Sunday will come in the NFC championship game, as all of the non-injured Penn Staters are in that game. Only expect to see Navorro Bowman and Kareem McKenzie on the field, however, since Jimmy Kennedy hasn’t been active since December 11th.
  • One of the key matchups in the Giants-Niners game will be the New York run game versus the Niners’s front 7. The Giants have struggled to run all year long and were ranked dead last in the NFL in rushing yards per game. The Niners had a historical year stopping the run, as they didn’t give up a rushing touchdown until week 16 and had the top-ranked run D. McKenzie and Bowman will play key roles in establishing each of those aspects of the game for their respective teams. That will be a battle to keep an eye on throughout the game.
  • Official PSU in the NFL prediction for this weekend: Giants, Patriots advance to create a rematch of Super Bowl 42.
