Conference Championships Recap: 3 PSUers Super Bowl Bound

January 23rd, 2012

Navorro Bowman

In terms of quantity, this weekend’s results were the best-case scenario for Penn Staters remaining in the playoffs. Only one player was eliminated out of the four that were alive entering the weekend. That one player, however, was the most exciting to watch of bunch. See how all the Nittany Lions in the NFL did in the Conference Championship games after the jump!

Advanced to Super Bowl

  • DT Jimmy KennedyGiants — Inactive (Coach’s Decision)
  • RT Kareem McKenzieGiants — Started, 1 fumble recovery, NYG: rushed for 95 yards, gave up 6 sacks
  • OL Rich OhrnbergerPatriots – Injured Reserve

  • LB Navorro Bowman49ers – 11 tackles, 0.5 sacks

  • In the rematch of Super Bowl 42, three Nittany Lions will square off; Kareem McKenzie (NYG), Jimmy Kennedy (NYG), and Rich Ohrnberger (NE). Of those three, only McKenzie will be on the field, though. Kennedy hasn’t been active since mid-December and Ohrnberger is on IR. Either way, at least one Penn Stater will leave Indianapolis as a Super Bowl champion.
  • It’s almost upsetting to see a rising star like Navorro Bowman come so close to the Super Bowl and come up just short. I say almost, because it seems crazy to think that San Francisco won’t be in a similar position next year. Bowman, a first team All-Pro, is at the heart of the young core in San Francisco and I think it’s fair to say that he’ll at least play in a Super Bowl at some point.
  • It’s quite the rarity to see the big men show up on the stat sheet. On Sunday night, Kareem McKenzie was able to do so when he recovered an Eli Manning fumble in the first half. Manning had been stripped while being sacked, and it came down to a race between Navorro Bowman and McKenzie to recover the loose ball. Fortunately, McKenzie won the race, although the Giants punted the next play.
